Nutrition for the Clinician: Out With the Pancreas, In With the Islets - Exploring Endocrine, Exocrine, and Perioperative Nutritional Complexities of Total Pancreatectomy With Islet Autotransplantation
To educate physicians and other health professionals on the fundamentals of nutrition, The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition launched a new article series titled Nutrition for the Clinician. The effort supports the White House National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health and its directives to expand nutrition knowledge of health care providers. Through case-based learning, Nutrition for the Clinician provides continuing education that enhances clinical reasoning and use of the best nutrition evidence in practice. Each clinical case will feature a clearly identified nutrition problem and defined learning objectives and be published in the journal’s regular issues periodically throughout the year.
Titled Out With the Pancreas, In With the Islets - Exploring Endocrine, Exocrine, and Perioperative Nutritional Complexities of Total Pancreatectomy With Islet Autotransplantation and brought to you under the leadership of AJCN Associate Editor, Nancy Krebs, MD, MS, Professor of Pediatrics, University of Colorado School of Medicine, authors Keven Walton, Sandra Roque, Emily Lemon, and Casey Luckhurst of Massachusetts General Hospital discuss a 42-y-old female with a medical history significant for recurrent acute pancreatitis was presented with nausea, vomiting, persistent abdominal pain, and oral intake intolerance with enteral nutrition (EN) dependency.

Statement of Need
Research has indicated that nutrition is minimally addressed in medical schools and residency programs. Many physicians recognize this gap and seek ways to improve their knowledge, competence, and practice in this area.

- Recognize the role of “prehab” nutrition optimization and post op nutrition support, including practical considerations for weaning nutrition support
- Describe the changes in endocrine and exocrine function in chronic pancreatitis and following total pancreatectomy with islet cell autotransplantation with review of dosing and administration considerations for pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy
- Highlight the role of perioperative multidisciplinary collaboration for the nutritional management of chronic pancreatitis and total pancreatectomy with islet cell autotransplantation
