Nutrition for the Clinician: Navigating Complex Nutritional Challenges After Bariatric Surgery: Malnutrition, Multiple Nutrient Deficiencies, and Gastrointestinal Dysfunction in Pregnancy

To educate physicians and other health professionals on the fundamentals of nutrition, The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition launched a new article series titled Nutrition for the Clinician. The effort supports the White House National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health and its directives to expand nutrition knowledge of health care providers. Through case-based learning, Nutrition for the Clinician provides continuing education that enhances clinical reasoning and use of the best nutrition evidence in practice. Each clinical case will feature a clearly identified nutrition problem and defined learning objectives and be published in the journal’s regular issues periodically throughout the year. 

Titled Navigating Complex Nutritional Challenges After Bariatric Surgery: Malnutrition, Multiple Nutrient Deficiencies, and Gastrointestinal Dysfunction in Pregnancy and brought to you under the leadership of AJCN Associate Editor, Nancy Krebs, MD, MS, Professor of Pediatrics, University of Colorado School of Medicine, Leen Z. Hasan and David S. Seres of Columbia University Irving Medical Center take us into the ER in this latest installment of Nutrition for the Clinician. A 34-y-old woman with one prior successful birth presented during her second pregnancy to the Emergency Department with new onset non-exertional dyspnea, pleuritic chest pain, and bilateral lower extremity swelling for 1 wk. Statement of Need

Research has indicated that nutrition is minimally addressed in medical schools and residency programs.  Many physicians recognize this gap and seek ways to improve their knowledge, competence, and practice in this area. 

    

Learning Objectives

  1. Assess nutritional status during pregnancy post bariatric surgery, considering the increased metabolic demands of pregnancy and the anatomic and physiologic GI changes following bariatric surgery
  2. Describe the role of albumin as a marker of systemic inflammation and its limitations as a nutritional marker due to capillary leak during inflammatory states
  3. Describe a multi-disciplinary approach to the evaluation and management of complex nutritional presentations after bariatric surgery
