Opening Session & Presidential Symposium: Food as Medicine: New Findings to Explain Reduced Risk of Cardiovascular Disease by Dietary Linoleic Acid (NUTRITION 2023 On Demand Collection)

This course is included in the NUTRITION 2023 On Demand Collection.

Linoleic acid is a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid found in vegetable oils, nuts, and seeds. There is confusion among the public on the effects of linoleic acid on health and its importance as part of a healthy diet. In a classic NUTRITION format, the Presidential Symposium approaches this topic by convening experts who broaden our understanding using different research methodologies.

Penny Kris-Etherton, PhD, RD (Pennsylvania State University) sets the stage and explains why we are still talking about edible plant-derived oils and CVD risk prevention. Frank Hu, MD (Harvard University) addresses the topic from an epidemiologic perspective, detailing what epi studies and biomarker analysis have inferred about dietary intake of linoleic acid and CVD risk. Jyrki Virtanen, PhD (University of Eastern Finland) reviews some of the key randomized controlled trials on linoleic acid and cardiovascular risk factors. Finally, Genevieve Sparagna, PhD (University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center), tackles a novel cellular target involving mitochondria that may shed new light on mechanisms of LA to favorably influence heart health.

This session addresses the latest clinical findings and new basic biology insights into how linoleic acid affects the heart.
