This webinar series will provide training on utilizing National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data to advance nutrition research. NHANES data are a critical component of the nation’s health infrastructure and serve as an important resource for health professionals, policy makers, researchers, the food and supplement industry, commodity groups, and public health departments. The NHANES website provides historic and current datasets and covers a wide range of critical topics, including dietary data, which this webinar series will focus on. NHANES uses a complex, multistage, probability sampling design which must be taken into account for analyses.
The first webinar in the series, Nuts and Bolts of NHANES - Using National Data to Advance Nutrition Research, will describe NHANES dietary data, the general process for utilizing this data, and provide specific examples of how NHANES analyses have informed U.S. dietary guidance. The second webinar will dig deeper into Using NHANES for Complex Diet and Health Analyses by identifying novel applications and tools for analyzing dietary data from NHANES and provide innovative case studies. This webinar will also review available resources to assist nutrition researchers in utilizing and analyzing NHANES data more fully.
This webinar series builds on ASN’s Committee on Advocacy and Science Policy (CASP)’s previous work related to support and strengthen NHANES, including a NUTRITION 2023 workshop, "Building an NHANES for the Future", a 2023 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition publication, “Critical data at the crossroads: the NHANES faces growing challenges,” and a 2022 CASP-organized webinar, “NHANES: Opportunities for Revitalization.”
