Sponsored Satellite Program: The Scientific Evolution of Bioactives in Human Health, Current Challenges, and the Path Ahead Illuminated by AI Driven Science
Sponsored By: Brightseed
This Sponsored Satellite Program was originally presented at NUTRITION 2023.
The overall session theme is to bring awareness to the evolving role of bioactives in human health, current challenges that prevent a universal understanding of their dietary value, and steps that can be taken to raise awareness around the importance of their inclusion in the diet, either through food sources or with the use of supplements. The first speaker will cover past and recent advances in bioactives research, including the publication featuring the most recent guideline development on flavan-3-ols (Crowe-White et al. 2022). The second speaker will lay out current challenges, like a universally accepted definition, product application, and availability of adequate scientific data to support dietary recommendations. The final speaker will present the future of bioactives, including high throughput discoveries using AI driven science and the scientific requirements to stay abreast. A panel discussion ensues, providing different angles on these topics, followed by a Q&A session.
Learning Objectives
- Share proposed framework for Bioactives Nomenclature and Definition, especially as it relates to bioactives identified through new technologies (AI)
- Discuss degree and type of evidence required to substantiate health benefits and the role that mechanistic (MoA) data might play, as well as propose strategies to increase daily intake of bioactives (crop variety selection, fortification, supplements
- Encourage the use of 'Food as Medicine' approach and highlight the most pressing target health areas for bioactives, specifically where the opportunities are most significant given the state of public health
