Advances in the Assessment of Malnutrition and Undernutrition (NUTRITION 2026 On Demand Collection)

This course is included in the NUTRITION 2026 On Demand Collection.

Accurate assessment of malnutrition and undernutrition remains a critical challenge across clinical and public health settings. This session highlights emerging frameworks and tools to improve the identification, diagnosis, and management of nutrition-related conditions across the life course.

The session opens with an introduction to the Assessing the Determinants of Malnutrition - Implications for Treatment (ADMIT) Project, a multidisciplinary effort to advance evidence-informed approaches to nutritional assessment. Emphasizing the complex interplay of biological, environmental, and social determinants, ADMIT seeks to strengthen the precision, validity, and applicability of assessment to better inform clinical care, research, and policy. A panel discussion with working group leaders will expand on these themes, highlighting key gaps and priorities for the field.

The session concludes with an overview of the new World Health Organization ICD-11 code for undernutrition in adults and its implications for clinical practice. This update marks an important step toward standardized diagnosis, improved quality of care, and enhanced ability to track and address undernutrition across healthcare systems.

Together, these presentations offer a forward-looking perspective on how advances in assessment can enable more targeted, effective, and equitable nutrition interventions.
