Sponsored Satellite Program: Recent Advances in Nutrition, The Gut Microbiome and Health

Sponsored By: PepsiCo

This Sponsored Satellite Program was originally presented at NUTRITION 2025, ASN's flagship meeting which was held May 31 to June 3 in Orlando, FL.

This program will review the most recent scientific knowledge about how diet and nutritional factors impact the gut microbiome and affect health outcomes. Dietary ingredients including pre-, pro-, syn- and post-biotics (collectively known as ‘biotics’) are becoming more recognized by consumers but until recently a clear scientific consensus on how these ingredients are defined has been lacking. In addition, there is a need to define best practices for clinical research examining health benefits and to standardize methods and reporting. Finally, the most recent understanding of the health benefits of biotic ingredients will be reviewed including emerging benefits with emphasis on digestive health, metabolism and the gut-brain axis.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain which dietary ingredients are known to impact the gut microbiome and the most recent information on how these ingredients are defined from a scientific standpoint
  • Describe the differences between pre-, pro-, syn- and post-biotics and their mechanisms of action
  • Discuss best practices for conducting clinical research on diet and the gut microbiome
  • Describe state of the science with respect to health benefits of dietary ‘biotic’ ingredients that modulate the gut microbiome
