Sponsored Satellite Program: Preparing for the 2030 Aging Dilemma: Nutrition Solutions for Aging Americans
Sponsored By: National Pork Board
This Sponsored Satellite Program was originally presented at NUTRITION 2024, ASN's flagship meeting which was held June 29 to July 2, 2024 in Chicago, IL.
Older adults are one of the fastest-growing groups in the United States. By 2030, 1 in every 5 people, or some 74 million Americans, will be aged 65 or older. This rapid expansion of the elderly population, coupled with uncertainty that sufficient resources or access to care will be available to improve health span, is known as the “2030 dilemma.” With six years to go, this session will explore what can be done now, and what research gaps still exist, for achieving healthy aging and a high quality of life through nutrition with a special focus on protein quality and amino acids for maintenance of muscle, brain, and organ function.
Learning Objectives
- Understand three key nutritional issues affecting older Americans ages 65 or older
- Recognize four distinct areas where protein quality can support the aging process
- Identify two current research gaps that exist between the intersection of protein quality and the “2030 dilemma”
- Recommend culturally appropriate foodways within food recommendations to maximize population impact
This Sponsored Satellite Program includes the following presentations:
- Introduction: Physiology of Age-Associated Decline, Implications for Nutrition (Sponsored Satellite Program)
- Nutrition Reinforcement in Aging: What Do We Know About Protein Quality (Sponsored Satellite Program)
- The Cultural Influence of Pork Consumption on Food Choices, Diet Quality, and Markers of Healthy Aging (Sponsored Satellite Program)
- From Science to Palate: Strategies for Integrating Age and Cultural Considerations in Nutrition Guidance (Sponsored Satellite Program)
- Panel Discussion - Preparing for the 2030 Aging Dilemma: Nutrition Solutions for Aging Americans (Sponsored Satellite Program)
