Sponsored Satellite Program: Nutrition and Neurocognitive Development in Early Life and Childhood

Sponsored By: Abbott Nutrition

This Sponsored Satellite Program was originally presented at NUTRITION 2024, ASN's flagship meeting which was held June 29 to July 2, 2024 in Chicago, IL.

The session will delve into the critical role of nutrition upon brain growth and development of cognitive function during infancy and early childhood. Emerging research on the effects of nutritional components on brain development and cognitive function will be discussed along with neuroimaging applications for this cohort. Specifically, Professor Elizabeth Johnson will cover research on the role of lutein and zeaxanthin during pregnancy and early childhood. Professor Naiman Khan will discuss the work highlighting the role of diet quality on cognitive function and brain health among school-aged children. The session will conclude with a presentation by Professor Brad Sutton on the use of neuroimaging techniques (i.e., magnetic resonance imaging) to visualize brain changes that may be derived from changes in nutrition.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe changes in brain development in early life and childhood
  • Discuss the effects of nutrients on brain function and cognitive development from early life to adolescence
  • Articulate the application of neuroimaging for assessing nutritional influence on early life cognitive development
